It appears many Covid-19 patients have normal lung function, yet their blood is not adequately oxygenated, Dr Jaco Laubscher says. If Covid-19 in fact turns out to be vascular, it may explain why the use of ventilators fails to save so many patients, he reasons.
The debate rages on about what kind of disease Covid-19 is and how it should be treated.
"If the lung is normal and you still get low oxygen levels, it must be the blood vessel," Laubscher believes. They argue that although thromboembolism is an important expression of the disease, it is only one of a variety of expressions. The statement is signed by Professor Vernon Cloete, chair and head of the Division of Clinical Haematology in the Department of Medicine at UCT; Professor Jessica Opie, Head of Haematology Pathology at UCT and the NHLS; and Professor Barry Jacobson of the Department of Molecular Medicine and Haematology, Faculty of Health Sciences at Wits.
“There is no doubt that Covid-19 has a variety of expressions, whether a haemophagocytic syndrome type phenotype associated with a cytokine storm, a more neurological phenotype, lung disease and/or gastrointestinal effects, etc.
