The clean-up is part of efforts to raise awareness of the impact of single-use plastic. To raise awareness of the impact single-use plastic has on oceans and waterways, members of the Portfolio Committee on Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment on Monday carried out a clean-up in Cape Town.
During the visit, members of Parliament met with government officials, non-governmental organisations and the private sector to share Kenya's achievements in combating plastic waste, and the success of the country's ban on single-use plastic bags in 2017. "South Africa has a strained waste management system which relies on landfills and is supported by a growing but marginalised informal waste sector. As a result, approximately 80 000 tons of plastic leaks into South Africa's environment each year, with plastic pollution infiltrating and blocking water and drainage systems, leading to increased flooding and spread of disease, harming biodiversity, and posing a threat to human health and the economy," the portfolio committee said.
