And this time, that happens to coincide with its opposition — that’s when the sun and Jupiter are on opposite sides of the earth. So Jupiter will rise in the east as the sun is setting in the west.
The last time you had Jupiter’s closest approach happening at the same time it was in opposition was 1963. “With good binoculars, the banding and three or four of the Galilean satellites should be visible,”at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, said in the NASA article. “It’s important to remember that Galileo observed these moons with 17th century optics. One of the key needs will be a stable mount for whatever system you use.”But will the weather cooperate? Accuweather’s forecast for the Harrisburg area calls for cloudy skies the first half of next week.
