This week, we invite our viewers to travel back in time to October 29, 1996, when CBS21 reporter Clare Flannery talked with experts about the dangers facing black cats during the Halloween season. According to a worker at the Harrisburg Human Society, people adopt black cats every year just to use them as Halloween props or accessories. Shortly after, many of these cats are abandoned. For this reason, the Harrisburg Humane Society wouldn't allow black cats to be adopted until the end of October.
But it's not just black cats in shelters who are at increased risk of danger — experts also say black cats kept as pets are more likely to go missing in fall. In response, the Animal Hospital in Elizabethtown decided to name the week leading up to Halloween "Black Cat Week," offering discounted physicals for black cats.
