Texas Sens. Ted Cruz and John Cornyn opposed Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, who survived GOP efforts to paint her as soft on child porn and a leftwing activist in bitter nomination fight.
The Texans joined most other Republicans in voting to block Jackson. But with three GOP senators breaking ranks, Democrats had the votes to overcome the filibuster, assuring confirmation Thursday afternoon. Cruz was among the toughest, accusing Jackson – who overlapped with him at Harvard Law School – of being too lenient in child pornography cases during her decade as a federal trial judge.
“This is a justice who will vote to take away our free speech rights, vote to take away our religious liberty rights, vote to take away our Second Amendment. And that means every senator that votes for her cannot avoid responsibility for those lawless outcomes,” he argued.
