Modutle said she hopes that the principals, teachers and staff who work at the schools for the Deaf will be mandated to learn fluent SASL and be sensitised on how to appropriately teach Deaf children, using sign language as a medium of instruction.
“However, it is not easy to get a university entrance and to afford university fees. So, in addition to universities, hopefully government will make a budget available for organisations and independent bodies to provide sign language lessons to the broader community. The more the better," she said.
We also hope that all the companies and organisations will be mandated to set aside a budget for sign language interpreters so that more deaf people are employed with full participation in their work environments. When it comes to entertainment and media, TV shows should have SASL interpreters so that deaf people can have more access to media content.
