Judy Blume blasts Florida lawmakers on abortion, saying she has 'the right'

Blume discussed her decision to receive two abortions in her lifetime, when she was married to her second husband, John Blume. The author explained that she only recently publicly admitted to the procedures after the Supreme Court released its decision on Dobbs v.

Jackson Women's Health Organization"because we’re at risk of losing our right to choose" to get abortions."In many states, we already have," Blume said. Florida has an abortion ban after six weeks."And, you know, I was lucky. I was in a terrible, let's just call it, a terrible second marriage. We had four teenagers between us. I was 40, and I knew the marriage wasn’t going to last. I mean, I don’t have to give reasons because, for any reason that a woman decides, this is a right. You need to be able to get this." The author was invited to the talk show as part of host Joy Behar's"banned book club." Her book Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret has been featured on banned book lists nationwide. Blume claimed she wrote the book largely focused on puberty because"there was a need for girls to understand what was happening to their bodies." Now that she lives in Key West, which she jokingly said she liked to pretend is not a part of Florida, her book faces censorship from the government there. "We have elected legislators who are trying to put through a law that stops elementary schoolgirls from talking about getting their periods," Blume said."Good luck, right? What are you going to do?" "They don’t ban guns, but they ban books," Behar said. She went on to say:"For 50 years, we took it for granted that we had that right [to abortion], and now, they want to take it away. It’s outrageous, really. It will probably cause the Republicans to lose the next election."Behar spent an earlier part of the episode saying she would rather have"Joe Biden drooling to any Republican" as president.
