WATCH: GovRonDeSantis says despite CDC vote, COVID-19 shot won't be requirement for Florida children

DeSantis said it's a new shot and shouldn't be lumped in with other more established vaccines.

"I get a kick out of when people kind of compare it to MMR and stuff, things that have been around for decades and decades." The governor added that the state's surgeon general, Joseph Ladapo, doesn't recommend the vaccine for children under 18.However, DeSantis said parents have the freedom to get their children the vaccine if they want to.

"The important thing is, school districts are not mandating this choice. We will make sure your freedom to make those decisions on behalf of your kids remains intact in the state of Florida, regardless of what the CDC does."
