WATCH: FukuyamaFrancis: Why SA must defend its institutions | PieterDuToit

Stanford University political scientist Francis Fukuyama says he is beginning to see the corrosive effects of the presidency of Donald Trump on key institutions in the United States. Although the US is one of the world's oldest and most established democracies, even its institutions aren't immune to cronyism and political influence.

He told News24 in an interview that it is crucial for South Africa's recovery to ensure that its institutions remain strong – but he also isn't surprised that they have been eroded. Fukuyama rose to prominence in 1989 after the publication of an essay titled"The end of history" in which he argued that the fall of communism means that there are no impediments to the spread of liberal democracy in the world. The New Yorker said the essay"turned the world of foreign policy on his head".

He has since published a number of books and academic works on governance, political systems and political change. in which he argues that the global urge for recognition drives the global dissatisfaction with the ruling world order.
