When the lockdown kicked in, husband and wife Matthew Kalil and Clea Mallinson were more than 14 000km apart. He was working in the US, and she was back home in South Africa.
Clea said of their joyous reunion:"My heart goes out to partners who are separated at this time. But use the time to work on self-love and self-care and it won't be wasted." Once out of quarantine, in Johannesburg:"I stayed the night at my in-laws and was lucky enough to get to use their car to drive back. I've never seen the roads so deserted. Mostly, just trucks. If I saw like 20 sedan cars on my side of the road the whole trip then that was a lot.
Coming from the teaching programme where he was based in Iowa - which is very flat -"seeing the mountains felt like coming home".
