The Tigers showed resilience under Williams’ guidance, though, and resolve after a surreal week that began with Monday’s firing of then-head coach Bryan Harsin and six other staff members. Auburn fell behind, 24-3, in the second quarter on the road but rallied to twice take the lead late in the fourth quarter before ultimately falling in overtime.
“Everything’s about your perspective, man,” Williams said. “...This is not a loss for us. Yeah, we did lose the mission, but there’s so many lessons for us out of this.” Williams, serving as a head coach for the first time at any level of football, also held himself accountable for the team’s loss. He credited the defense for stepping up after a tough start against the Air Raid, holding Mississippi State to 64 yards, no points and forcing three turnovers over nine straight possessions between the second and fourth quarters.
