“Treaty is not a dirty word. Treaty is something that if we embraced it as a nation we could really mature as a nation.” “I do think so, but at the same it is an opportunity to talk more about treaty so there is a better understanding. Senator Thorpe has told Sky News she wants to see a “treaty of the 21st century” – branding it as a “blank canvas”.
“If you look at treaties around the world – no-one lost their home, no one lost their job, they were enriched by culture and the land of which they lived on.”Lidia Thorpe believes the Albanese Government should have abandoned its plans to hold the referendum – calling it a costly “wasted exercise”. Twelve months on, Senator Thorpe argues the referendum’s failure was a result of both poor communication from the Yes campaign and the voice proposal itself.Asked if switching her support for the Yes campaign could have made a difference in the result: “Maybe, maybe not. It was just so badly run. Around the country the Yes campaign were going about their business so badly it just left a bad taste in peoples mouth.
