Three seats won by the Tories and one by Labour are marginal constituencies where WASPI women votes could be decisive
Nearly 90,000 WASPI women voters in Lancashire could help to swing the election - as pressure mounts on Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer to commit to compensation.
That means their votes could be decisive when Britain goes to the polls later this year. The WASPI vote could hold the most sway in Burnley, won by Antony Higginbotham in 2019 with a majority of 1,352.The 4,960 WASPI women living in Burnley could easily wipe out that majority. Meanwhile, the Tories are already facing a by-election in Blackpool South following Scott Benton’s resignation, where there are 4,550 WASPI voters, enough to overturn his 2019 majority of 3,690.
Neither the Conservatives nor Labour have committed to pay compensation to the WASPI women after the watchdog said last month that 1950s-born women who weren't properly notified that the state pension age was rising should be handed payouts. The Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman said ministers should address the injustice caused to more than 3.6 million women nationwide due to failings by the Department of Work and Pensions .
“With the numbers of Waspi women outnumbering the majorities of nearly 170 MPs, it’s clear the votes of those affected will have a big impact in a general election that could happen within months. What we need now is all parties in Westminster to make an urgent commitment to delivering fair and fast compensation and for the Government to allow a debate on the proposals so all MPs can have their say.
