Washington State Ferry workers are reporting an increase in unruly behavior and verbal abuse from passengers at their terminals.
This comes as the Washington State Ferry system deals with a lack of boats, delayed or canceled sailings, and worker shortages.
Tapp said he has been working at the Edmonds terminal for nine years and said it seems like every year they deal with more angry passengers. Tapp said he gets yelled at and mistreated by passengers almost every day, and while he said it’s never gotten physical, he worries about things escalating. Washington State Ferry officials said they’ve even gotten reports of some drivers aiming at crew members with their vehicles, but officials say not all passengers are like that, and many understand it's not the worker's fault.“There are lots and lots of great customers that are just happy to get on a ferry boat, but there are those few that decide to take out their anger on the front line workers, and that’s not acceptable," said Ian Sterling, spokesperson for WSF.
