Washington coach Vincent Grayson won a state title as a player with Waltrip and has a chance as coach this year.The Booker T. Washington basketball program might be new to the bright lights and immense pressure that come with playing at the UIL state tournament.Grayson was an assistant for Waltrip when the program captured its lone state title in 1998 under the Rams’ late head coach Fred Smith, who died in 2012.Washington will make its debut on the state tournament stage at 3 p.m.
“I told my guys, ‘I’m going to be there. I’m going with or without y’all,’” Grayson recalled with a smile. “They made their minds up that they wanted to go, too, so we’re all going to be there together.” The Golden Eagles had many fruitful years with PVIL state semifinal appearances in 1941, 1945, 1946, 1952 and 1959. They won the 4A crown with a 40-31 victory over Galveston Central in 1946.Chris McDermott and Washington are preparing for trip to state tournament.“It really hasn’t soaked in yet,” Grayson said. “But people are just so happy, and they’ve been waiting on this for a long time. First time under the UIL that Booker T. Washington has gone to state. That’s huge.
