The Senate Committee must prioritize advanced recycling technology and processes based on their capabilities in reducing plastic waste.
The Senate Environment and Public Works Subcommittee on Chemical Safety, Waste Management, Environmental Justice, and Regulatory Oversight began to host a series of hearings on plastics starting on March 30th. As this issue remains in focus, the Committee must prioritize advanced recycling technology and processes based on their capabilities in reducing plastic waste.
Effective recycling is a critical component in our waste reduction efforts. Advanced plastics recycling helps major recycling companies find new homes for more plastic used in a variety of industries. Current plastic recycling standards are only able to capture and repurpose a small fraction of the plastics used. Advanced recycling initiatives can repurpose up to 90% of plastic, allowing less to enter the waste stream and find its way to our landfills, oceans, beaches, and more.
This increase in recycling capacity could also make plastics an even more attractive choice for manufacturers. A recent study found that plastics have a lower greenhouse gas impact than 13 of 14 alternate materials. Production costs for plastics are also comparatively lower, meaning companies can have both positive environmental and economic impacts by embracing advanced recycling.
Pennsylvania is already a leader in this movement following the adoption of a new advanced recycling law in 2020. Now it is time for Washington to follow our lead and embrace this technology across the country. I am calling on the Committee to remember the importance of advanced recycling during these hearings. If you purchase a product or register for an account through one of the links on our site, we may receive compensation.
