Washington state lawmakers are advancing two bills, known as the Driver Privacy Act, to regulate the use of Flock cameras, which capture and store license plate information to aid law enforcement. The legislation aims to address concerns about data sharing with out-of-state agencies, such as the federal government, which the ACLU of Washington warns could target vulnerable groups, including immigrants and individuals seeking reproductive or gender-affirming care.
The bills propose retention periods for collected data, limit data sharing, and establish guidelines for law enforcement's use of the cameras. The House bill includes additional audit requirements for the equipment. Privacy concerns have already led to the deactivation of Flock cameras in cities like Auburn and Redmond.
