The Washington State Department of Agriculture and the United States Department of Agriculture successfully eradicated the northern giant hornet from the US after years of dedicated work.
Years of work, including the discovery of a male northern giant hornet in Marysville, helped eradicate it in Washington and the United States. Washington is the only state in the US where the hornet was reported. It was first detected in Canada in August 2019.
After more than 8 years of working with many government agencies and institutions, plus private citizens, the Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) eradicated the northern giant hornet (Vespa mandarinia), first discovered in Washington in December 2019. The work to find and destroy nests went on for several years, until 2021 when four nests in Whatcom County were destroyed. The hornets can destroy honey bee hives in a matter of hours, creating a serious threat to agriculture and native pollinators. Citizen science: Many people set traps and reported sightings, helping the WSDA find and destroy nests. Vacuuming: Yes, the WSDA used a vacuum hose to remove hornets from nests. Carbon dioxide: They also injected carbon dioxide into trees to kill or anesthetize any remaining hornets
