Washington D.C. officials are implementing extensive security measures for the 60th Presidential Inauguration, scheduled for January 20th. The inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump is being treated as a national special security event, prompting a year-long collaboration between local and federal agencies.

Washington, D.C. officials are meticulously preparing for the 60th Presidential Inauguration , scheduled for Monday, January 20th. The swearing-in of President-elect Donald Trump has been designated a national special security event, prompting the Metropolitan Police Department to collaborate with federal partners for nearly a year on a comprehensive inaugural security plan. This robust security plan will ensure the inauguration enjoys an unprecedented level of protection.

At a press conference on Monday, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser outlined the plan, which will involve concerted efforts from both city and federal agencies. 'Every four years, the District is proud to support the peaceful transition of power,' said Mayor Bowser. 'We take pride in this responsibility, and we’re grateful to our federal partners, local agencies, and community members who work together to ensure a safe and secure event.' Mayor Bowser emphasized that high-visibility patrols, strategically placed fencing, and barriers will be implemented throughout the week. Widespread road closures across downtown D.C. will commence on Sunday, January 19th, and persist into the early morning hours of Tuesday, January 21st. D.C. Police Chief Pamela Smith further elaborated on the security measures, stating that there will be a significant, visible increase in police presence across the District. 'Our entire police department will be activated for the presidential inauguration,' she said, adding that an additional 4,000 officers from across the United States will be deployed as reinforcements. Chief Smith also revealed that 7,800 National Guard members will be activated throughout D.C. to assist with the inaugural events. Matt McCool, the U.S. Secret Service special agent in charge of the Washington field office, indicated that hundreds of thousands of people are anticipated to converge on the nation's capital to witness the presidential inauguration. Both District and federal officials cautioned that travel may be considerably slower due to local road closures and highway closures that will directly impact traffic around the National Mall, the U.S. Capitol, the Convention Center, and Union Station. The detailed list of road closures and traffic restrictions provided by the authorities outlines a comprehensive traffic management plan for the duration of the inaugural events. This includes specifying which streets will be open for local traffic only, which streets will be entirely closed to vehicular traffic, and the specific timeframes for these restrictions. Additionally, the authorities have implemented flight restrictions in and around D.C. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued temporary flight restrictions, according to Aviation International News. They anticipate publishing these detailed flight restrictions no later than January 15th. In a statement, U.S. Secret Service special agent McCool confirmed that drones will also play a role in the security plan for the inauguration
