The lawsuit claims Kalshi violates the state’s Gambling Act and Consumer Protection Act by offering wagers on a wide range of outcomes, including sports games, political races, and even public health data and court proceedings.Kalshi describes its service as a “prediction market,” but the complaint argues its operations meet Washington’s legal definition of gambling: risking something of value on the outcome of a contest of chance or a future event.“Kalshi wants people betting on almost everything possible in life,” Brown said in a statement. “For Kalshi, every event, every tragedy is nothing more than a potential way for Americans to risk their fortunes.” The attorney general’s office alleges Kalshi offers common sports wagers such as point spreads, over/under bets and proposition bets — all of which are illegal online in Washington.The complaint also points to Kalshi advertising that suggests users can “bet on anything,” including references to betting on NFL games despite Washington’s restrictions. Kalshi entered the market in 2025 and quickly expanded its offerings, the lawsuit says. State officials argue such platforms increase the risk of problem gambling, particularly when easily accessible online.
