CBS and its parent company, Paramount, have agreed to pay $16 million to President Trump's foundation for his future presidential library. The settlement is part of a lawsuit that many legal experts predicted Trump had little chance of winning.
before the 2024 election. A longer response from the interview was played on CBS's "Face the Nation," leading Trump to accuse the network of deceptive editing and "election interference." "They changed it," said at an October 22, 2024 rally, referring to the edited response. "They took it out, threw it out."In an interview with The National News Desk on Wednesday, Peter Loge, an associate professor at George Washington University's School of Media & Public Affairs, said: "It’s not a legitimate claim. You were going to edit this interview. Of course it’s normal to edit. That’s how news works. The unedited version of News is C-SPAN." Nevertheless, at the same October rally, Trump remarked, "We’re probably going to sue 'em just for the hell of it." In a statement, CBS head George Cheeks said the settlement allows the companies to focus on their core mission. "If the core objective of CBS were the news, they would keep litigating," Loge said. "The core objective of CBS is to generate revenue."Critics also condemned an agreement to release complete transcripts by "60 Minutes" with future presidential candidates. Richard Vatz, professor emeritus at Towson University, said, "It’s an unconstitutional idea and it really makes the Trump administration look efficacious and look like it’s a totalitarian leadership when it attacks the freedom of the press to this point." Vatz, who said he usually supports Trump's policy positions called the settlement "constitutionally outrageous," adding, "You’ve got to have freedom of the press." The $16 million settlement mirrors a previous agreement with ABC News after anchor George Stephanopoulos incorrectly stated Trump had been found liable for rape in a civil suit. ABC also recently fired longtime reporter Terry Moran after a series of posts critical of Trump and his adviser Stephen Miller. So far, lawsuits have earned the President $67 million for his Presidential foundation and library, with indications that more may be forthcoming.to sue CNN for publishing articles about leaked intelligence regarding a U.S. attack on Iran, which stated it had only set Iran’s nuclear program back by a couple of months.
