The Rams won 10 bouts including four straight technical falls
Joe Zedalis | NJ Advance Media for NJ.comSouthern, wrestling with its usual brand of physicality, relentlessness and confidence knocked Jackson Township down a peg Wednesday night. The Rams won 10 bouts — including four-straight technical falls between 106 and 126 — and hammered the Jaguars, 43-19, ending their 13 match winning streak.
Meanwhile, Southern ran its undefeated record to 9-0. The Rams have Middle Township on Saturday and then the long-awaited showdown with No. 3 Christian Brothers in Lincroft next Wednesday. Based on the completeness of the victory, it was evident Southern took note of Jackson’s 51-26 win over No. 12 Rumson-Fair Haven over the weekend. That victory was by a larger margin than the Rams defeated RFH by on Jan. 9. “We knew they’d be coming into this match with a lot of momentum,” said Southern head coach Dan Roy. “It was important for us not to take them lightly. We told our kids they’re going to be looking to knock you off. They got a big win early, the place was going crazy. Our kids could have been scared by it but they just competed. The match started at 157 pounds and Jackson actually evenly split the first six bouts. When its 285-pounder Andrew Chitacapa scored a first period fall, the Jaguars led 14-13.The Rams won five straight bouts and clinched victory with three bouts to go. Jackson’s state place-winner Armani McCann momentarily ended the spree with a technical fall but Southern closed things out with a pair of wins. “We just didn’t show up,” said Jackson head coach Gianni Ghione. “That’s all it came down to. If we scrap with that team it’s a different match.”“Maybe. I don’t know,” Ghione said. “A lot of these kids haven’t been in a match of this magnitude. Maybe that was a factor. “The biggest thing was their experience. They saved points when they needed to save points. They were smart in different positions. They got points when they needed points. That’s what I noticed.” As expected Southern dominated the lower weights. Jackson never recovered and Southern was never headed., gave Southern the lead for good with a takedown-filled technical fall. Then came another technical fall by another freshman Nick Banos at 113. Banos even hit a spladle for a near fall in the bout. At 120, sophomore Cade Collins, No. 4 in New Jersey, a third technical fall. After No. 6 Anthony Mason won by technical fall in 33 seconds, Southern had a 33-14 lead.McCann, the No. 5 138-pounder in the state, won 18-1. Southern finished things off with a 17-8 win by Attila Viglante over Hunter Pazinko and a 5-0 win by Anthony Molinaro.Jiles, Eife start Collingswood’s motor as bonus points rule in win over West DeptfordJoe Zedalis is in his 48th year covering high school sports.
