Warrensville Heights Mayor Brad Sellers has dropped out of the race for Cuyahoga County Executive in wake of a report that discovered he owed thousands in county property taxes when he claimed on tax abatement application that he was debt-free.
and The Plain Dealer that discovered he owed thousands in county property taxes when he claimed on a tax abatement application that he was debt-free.“I entered the race for Cuyahoga County Executive on January 5, 2022,” Sellers’ statement says. “Recent reports have now become a distraction in this race, so today I am announcing I am withdrawing my candidacy for the position of Cuyahoga County Executive.
But to qualify for the tax break, Sellers claimed he did not owe delinquent taxes or other debts to the city or state, according to a copy of the application, which was notarized. In reality, he was $13,600 in arrears on his property taxes and also had active state and federal liens. The reporting showed that Sellers was still delinquent 14 days later, when he asked city council to approve his abatement, and when he certified it. County records show he did not pay the debt until Aug. 24 of that year – the day a TV reporter showed up at City Hall to confront him about his delinquency.Laws also prohibit having an-- in other words, misusing one’s official position for his or her own personal benefit.
