Extreme spring weather is bringing high winds, blowing snow, rain and an ice glaze to areas of the state starting over the Aleutian chain and continuing north to coastal and inland areas of Western Alaska.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -

Multiple warnings and advisories remain active as a series of storms continues to impact the Aleutians and west coast. These storms are ushering in precipitation, elevated winds and warming temperatures. It is a much different weather picture in Southcentral. A mix of fog and clouds hovered above Anchorage on the first full day of spring until clouds finally lifted and parted enough for the sun to start melting snow and warm town.Temperatures reached the lower 40s in parts of the city, with an official high of 39 for Wednesday.

Extreme weather over the west comes from the jet stream surging north and ensnaring surface low pressure, helping it to intensify as it lumbers north. A ridge of high pressure is also preventing the systems from a more zonal west-to-east flow.
