A fire service has issued the warning after they were called to a car fire
Motorists are being warned of the severe consequences of leaving their sunglasses on their car's dashboard.
It comes after a pair of shades ignited a fire in a vehicle by magnifying a concentrated ray from the sun, melting the car's plastic interior and parts of its engine bay. Nottingham Fire and Rescue Service became alerted to a fire that broke out at 5.05pm in the village of Nuthall on Saturday, May 27.
The fire only went out after a fire engine attended to the scene. Now, the Service is warning drivers to avoid keeping sunglasses or anything shiny in their vehicles that might lead to a similar incident.Writing on social media, a spokesperson said: “The sun has been strong but beware this can cause fire. Earlier we attended a fire caused by sunglasses left on the dashboard.
"Make sure you keep reflective objects out of direct sunlight.” After the Service posted an image of the incident on social media, users thanked them for their service and for alerting them on the unknown risks. One wrote: “Good information, looks nasty. Well done on giving out a warning and attending the fire.” Another added: “Never knew that! Thanks.”
