The data indicates that more than one million people died from drug-resistant infections globally each year between 1990 and 2021
More than 39 million people could die from antibiotic-resistant infections between now and 2050, according to a new global analysis. The researchers warn that "now is the time to act" to protect people worldwide from the threat posed by resistance to infection-treating drugs.
The study estimates that 1.91 million people could potentially die directly due to AMR in 2050, a nearly 70% annual increase compared to 2022. Over the same period, the number of deaths involving AMR bacteria will increase by almost 75% from 4.71 million to 8.22 million per year, reports Wales Online.
The new study's estimates were compiled for 22 pathogens, 84 pathogen-drug combinations, and 11 infectious conditions, including meningitis and bloodstream infections, affecting individuals across all age groups in 204 countries and territories. The data was collated from various sources such as hospital records, mortality data, and antibiotic usage statistics.
He added a call to action for the public: "We can all help by only taking antibiotics if you have been told to do so by a healthcare professional. Do not save some for later or share them with friends and family. Treat antibiotics with respect and they will be there to help us all in the future." In an accompanying commentary also published in The Lancet, experts have issued a stark warning that without urgent intervention, the world could witness a catastrophic surge in resistance against fungal diseases. This cautionary note was orchestrated by specialists from the University of Manchester, the Westerdijk Institute, and the University of Amsterdam.
