The Great Beyond’s new release date is revealed.
Jenna Ortega and Glen Powell's upcoming film, The Great Beyond, has been delayed by almost an entire year. The sci-fi fantasy movie is directed by J.J.
Abrams, with the Star Wars and Star Trek director also serving as a producer with Tommy Gormley. Ortega and Powell's co-stars are Emma Mackey, Samuel L. Jackson, Merritt Wever, and Sophie Okonedo. Previously scheduled for November 13, 2026, The Great Beyond will now be released on October 1, 2027.
According to Deadline, this comes as Warner Bros. is making several changes to its theatrical calendar, including for The Batman Part II, which had been scheduled for The Great Beyond's new release date before it was moved to February 18, 2028. Back in April, Warner Bros. shared a preview of The Great Beyond at CinemaCon, and a recent test screening led the studio to decide that the movie should get a 70mm IMAX release.
No other major films are being released on October 1, though a new Blair Witch Project will come out the week prior. Other October 2027 releases include The Haunting of Hotel Transylvania and The Mummy 4.
Aside from The Great Beyond, 2027 will also see Warner Bros. release movies like M. Night Shyamalan's Remain, The Revenge of La Llorona, Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, a new Ocean's Eleven installment, Man of Tomorrow, A Minecraft Movie Squared, The Conjuring: First Communion, Margie Claus, Gremlins 3 and The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. Over the past 13 years, Abrams' big-screen projects have been part of existing franchises.
He directed and produced Star Trek Into Darkness, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker , and executive-produced Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The last time Abrams directed an original project was back in 2011 with Super 8. Last year, he co-created Duster for HBO Max, but the crime thriller was quickly canceled.
Abrams is also a producer on David Robert Mitchell's The End of Oak Street, which arrives in theaters this August. The Great Beyond star Ortega plays the titular character in Netflix's hit supernatural series Wednesday, which released season 2 in 2025. Wednesday season 3 is currently in production and will likely be released on the popular streamer sometime in 2027, the same year as The Great Beyond.
Ortega's other credits include Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous, You, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Scream , and Scream VI. Meanwhile, Powell is the star and co-creator of the Hulu comedy Chad Powers, with season 2 expected to premiere this year. The actor has also appeared in Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous, Scream Queens, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, The Running Man, Twisters, and Top Gun: Maverick. The Great Beyond will be released in theaters on Friday, October 1, 2027.
