Temperatures are expected to reach at least 90 degrees Thursday in the region’s hottest spots.

The Bay Area’s first warm-up of 2023 began to build Wednesday, and like most warming trends, it’s creating dirty air.

“We’re warming up a bit . Then our warmest day will be Thursday,” National Weather Service meteorologist Sean Miller said. “It’ll be warm Friday, and then that’s it. By Saturday, we’ll be dropping off.”For that reason, the Spare the Air alert issued by the Bay Area Air Management District for Thursday may be an isolated one. it will mark only the second one of 2023. The air district issued 17 Spare the Air days last year.

According to Miller, the high pressure aloft likely will cause temperatures in the region’s hottest areas — Brentwood in Contra Costa County; Livermore in Alameda County and areas of the Santa Clara Valley — to reach the low 90s. Other areas of the region not near the coast are likely to rise into the 80s, and coastal areas are expected to reach at least 70 degrees.“The pattern we are talking about is a progressive one,” he said.
