After a stretch of quiet weather and clear skies, changes are on the horizon starting Wednesday. The mountains will start to see some light snow, while the plains could get a few isolated thunderstorms, some of which might be strong to severe.
The storms will mainly fire up in the afternoon and evening, with the best chances for stronger activity over Weld, Logan, and Morgan Counties. If you live in those areas, keep an eye out for gusty winds and possibly some hail.Temperatures will take a noticeable dip after Wednesday’s warmth. A cold front moves in Wednesday night into Thursday, bringing cooler air and more unsettled conditions. The mountains could pick up a few inches of snow—especially the northern ranges—while the plains will see more scattered showers and storms, especially to the north. Highs on Thursday will be 10 to 20 degrees cooler than Wednesday, so don’t be surprised if you need a jacket again.As the colder air settles in, overnight lows will start to flirt with frost levels. Thursday night could bring patchy frost to places like Weld County and along the Palmer Divide. By Saturday night into Sunday morning, it’s looking like we’ll see our first widespread freeze east of the urban corridor. If you haven’t winterized your sprinkler system yet, now’s the time.Things calm down again by the weekend, with sunshine and near-normal temperatures returning Friday and Saturday. Sunday looks even warmer and drier, thanks to a ridge building in from the west. However, that also brings a heads-up for fire weather concerns on the plains. Dry air and some gusty winds could create favorable conditions for fires, so stay alert if you live in those areas.Looking ahead to early next week, snow lovers might want to get a little excited. There are early signs of a possible system that could bring the season’s first snowfall to lower elevations. It’s still too far out for details, but it’s something to watch.
