San Antonio's record-breaking warm December comes to an end as temperatures drop back to near-seasonal norms.

San Antonio experienced one of its warmest Decembers ever recorded, with an average temperature of 60.8 degrees, ranking as the fourth-warmest December on record. Daytime temperatures reached the 80s seven times during the month, including four consecutive days from December 27th to 30th. This warm spell is expected to end as we transition into the new year. Light northerly winds over the next few days will bring temperatures back to near-seasonal norms.

South Texas can anticipate maximum temperatures in the 60s for the first four to five days of January, while North Texas will likely see temperatures in the 50s. A significant weather shift is anticipated for the second week of January as arctic air moves south into the southern Plains. New Year's Day will begin chilly with temperatures in the lower to mid-40s across the San Antonio area. Areas to the north will be colder, with temperatures dropping to the mid- to upper 30s in Hill Country towns like Fredericksburg, Kerrville, and Boerne. Temperatures will gradually warm up throughout the day with partly to mostly sunny skies, reaching 50 degrees by 10 am and an afternoon high in the lower 60s. Temperatures will increase slightly through the second half of the week, staying near or slightly above the climate average for early January. Highs will generally range from the mid- to upper 60s from Thursday to Friday, possibly reaching 70 degrees by Saturday. Overnight lows will remain in the upper 40s to near 50 degrees. Mostly cloudy skies are expected on Thursday with a chance of isolated drizzle in the morning. However, most areas should remain dry for the rest of the week
