The warden of a West Texas federal jail for immigrants has been fired after he and a brother allegedly shot at migrants walking along a roadside in Hudspeth County on Sept. 27, killing one and wounding another.

FILE -

A spokeswoman for the Texas Department of Public Safety, which includes the Rangers unit, said the brothers were in a truck on FM 1111, about four miles south of Sierra Blanca, when they pulled over and one of them fired at the migrants. A male migrant was killed and a female was wounded in the stomach and taken to a Del Rio hospital.

Scott Sutterfield, a spokesman for Louisiana-based LaSalle Corrections, confirmed via email that Sheppard no longer worked for the company.
