A Wisconsin man driving a stolen car struck another motorist head-on in Antioch on Saturday, Antioch authorities said Monday.

The collision happened at 11:06 a.m. Saturday on Illinois Route 173. Underwood, police say, was driving a 2017 Chevrolet Malibu that had been reported stolen earlier that day in Antioch, police said.

Antioch police and other agencies were tracking the car, and had reports that the vehicle was being driven erratically and at a high rate of speed. Moments before the collision, the car passed an Antioch police vehicle that was parked along Route 173.The officer attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but the Malibu had already struck the Volvo just west of Tiffany Road, police said.

The Volvo driver was taken to a hospital, but was released later that afternoon. Underwood, who has active warrants from McHenry County, was hospitalized with injuries, and is expected in bond court after his release. “I am thankful that this fugitive who displayed a disregard for the life and safety of others, is off the streets,” Antioch Police Chief Geoffrey Guttschow said in a statement released Monday. “His actions could have caused a deadly consequence. He will be prosecuted to the fullest extent that the law allows.”
