It appears the induction ceremony will resemble a massive family reunion for Joe Thomas and company.
A convergence of factors will draw thousands of fans to the Hall of Fame for enshrinement week.
Mac Speedie, who played in the 1940s, was elected in 2020. In 2007, Gene Hickerson made it; he played solely for Cleveland from 1958 to 1973. Joe DeLamielleure, who played for Cleveland and Buffalo in the 1970s and ‘80s, was elected in 2003. And Ozzie Newsome made it in 1999, the first season the Browns came back after a three-year, post-Baltimore move hiatus.
“We’ll work with all the enshrinees and say, ‘Start working on your friends and family list.’ Might be 40 or 50, might be 200,” Desrosiers said. Thomas’ close pal Ben Strickland, a high school football coach and teammate of Thomas’ in high school and college, is planning to attend. Ted Kellner, a financial adviser who worked with a willing business-minded Thomas in college, is headed to Canton along with University of Wisconsin Athletic Director Chris McIntosh. Several of Thomas’ high school coaches, including his basketball head coach Mark Adams, are planning to attend.
“We’ve talked about, ‘Are there some other viewing parties we can do around the campus?’ " he said, with the goal of creating “a tailgate-like atmosphere” with monitors in overflow areas.
