There are ways to examine the steps and missteps taken in the fight against COVID\u002D19 without turning it into a finger\u002Dpointing exercise.
It certainly does — and that’s probably the reason Premier Scott Moe is so opposed to the idea. But that’s no reason not to do it anyway.
There were precautions taken at the start of the pandemic that probably weren’t necessary — just as there are precautions that, if we had taken them earlier, could have drastically reduced the rate of infection and the number of deaths the virus has caused. In other words, one of the ways to make sure that learning sticks — one of the ways to take advantage of all of that tragic COVID-19 education, with all of its heartbreak and loss — is to have a clear-eyed examination of what went right, and what went wrong.Think of it this way: When there’s a major railway, pipeline, marine or aircraft incident, the federal Transportation Safety Board of Canada launches an investigation into the causes.
In short, a TSB inquiry hopefully keeps a mistake from being made again, with the same tragic consequences as the first time. With fact-finding, not finger-pointing.
