Concerns over the kidnapping of Chinese actor Wang Xing have led to a decline in Chinese tourist bookings to Thailand and other Southeast Asian countries.
Chinese travelers are canceling their Lunar New Year holiday plans to visit Thailand amidst growing concerns over the kidnapping of actor Wang Xing. The incident, which saw Wang rescued from a scamming compound along the Thai-Myanmar border, has triggered a wave of apprehension among Chinese tourists. According to marketing agency China Trading Desk, net booking volume for trips to Thailand plummeted by 15.6% from January 13 to January 20 compared to the previous week.
This decline extends to other Southeast Asian countries as well, with data from aviation analytics company VariFlight revealing cancellations for trips to Vietnam, Singapore, Indonesia, and Malaysia, though to a lesser extent.China Trading Desk CEO Subramania Bhatt characterized Thailand as experiencing the most significant decline, while other Southeast Asian countries are facing 'collateral damage.' Bhatt explained that many travelers plan multi-destination trips within the region, so cancellations in Thailand have also impacted bookings for other countries. Conversely, Chinese travelers are demonstrating increased interest in destinations like Australia (+4.8%), the United Arab Emirates (+4.7%), and South Korea (+3.9%), with bookings for Lunar New Year trips surging. The incident has reignited fears about scams and human trafficking targeting Chinese tourists in Southeast Asia. While Thailand officials are attempting to reassure Chinese visitors about the safety of traveling to the country, the situation highlights the broader issue of cross-border scamming operations prevalent in the region. These operations often target vulnerable individuals lured with false promises of employment or investment opportunities, leading to exploitation and human trafficking. The United Nations has reported on the prevalence of such scams in special economic zones in Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar, where legal oversight is weak. Despite the concerns, Chinese outbound travel is gradually recovering, albeit unevenly. While destinations like Singapore and Malaysia are witnessing a quicker return of Chinese tourists, long-haul destinations like Europe and the United States remain less popular due to factors like geopolitical tensions and high travel costs. China's economic slowdown and consumer confidence issues also play a role in shaping travel patterns
