Reece Walsh, Kalyn Ponga and Dylan Edwards were among the best players in the NRL this year but they have been left out of the Australia squad for the Pacific Championships.
Dylan Edwards, Reece Walsh and Dally M Medal winner Kalyn Ponga were left out of the Kangaroos squad named in Sydney on Tuesday but Valentine Holmes and Josh Addo-Carr have been included despite being involved in recent off-field incidents.on Saturday at the Koori Knockout while representing the Sydney All Blacks against eventual tournament winners Walgett. His selection is pending an investigation.
“We’re not going to comment on the Addo-Carr situation because it’s with the integrity unit, and we’ll let them do their investigation,” ARL Commission chairman Peter V’landys said. “With Valentine Holmes, it will be announced this afternoon he has a one-match suspension, and he has accepted the penalty. He won’t be available for the first Test.”Meninga said he always anticipated Holmes would miss the first game, but “getting him back in the rugby league environment will be good for him”.
Premiership heroes Nathan Cleary, Isaah Yeo and Liam Martin are all in the team, but there was no room for Edwards, who was touted as a back-up fullback and centre option.The selection panel, which included Boyd Cordner and Cameron Smith, picked five members of the Brisbane grand final team, although rising star Walsh was not among them. Payne Haas, Patrick Carrigan, Thomas Flegler, Kotoni Staggs and Selwyn Cobbo all made the cut.
