Walmart, the world’s largest retailer, says it will close all of its stores on Thanksgiving Day in part to honor their employees who have faced “a trying year” with the coronavirus pandemic.

July 22, 2020 – The world’s largest retailer said this week it will close all of its stores on Thanksgiving Day in part to honor their employees who have faced “a trying year” with the coronavirus pandemic.“We hope they will enjoy a special Thanksgiving Day at home with their loved ones,” Furner said in a statement. “We are certainly thankful to our people for all their efforts.”

The announcement also pertains to Walmart-owned Sam’s Club warehouse stores. An announcement about store hours for the day after Thanksgiving, commonly known as “Black Friday,” one of the busiest shopping days of the year, will come later, the company said. Thanksgiving Day had become another massive day for retail shopping as many major chains used it as an unofficial start to the Christmas shopping season.

The Thanksgiving announcement came as the company said it will provide additional cash bonuses to employees, including $300 for full-time workers and $150 for part-time or temporary employees. It is the third bonus Walmart has given employees this year. “Since the beginning of this pandemic, I’ve been so proud to see how our associates have pulled together to take care of each other and our members,” said Kathryn McLay, president and CEO of Sam’s Club. “These are extraordinary times, and our associates have lifted each other up in extraordinary ways, and we are so grateful.”Walmart.com, “Walmart Invests $428 Million More in Associates with Another Special Bonus; Totaling $1.1 Billion in Special Bonuses So Far This Year.
