Walmart is the latest retailer to have some of its employees use body cameras.
The company didn’t give specifics on its security measures in a statement to USA Today, but Walmart noted it’s a move to utilize the latest in retail industry technology.
A person close to the project told the newspaper the decision is a focus on employee safety at a handful of stores.Stores like TJ Maxx and HomeGoods are already using body cameras in some of its locations in efforts to cut down on shoplifting. The National Retail Federation released a new study on Tuesday. It reports a 93% increase in the average number of shoplifting incidents per year in 2023 compared to 2019.
The group also reports more than one-third of retailers surveyed said they were looking at body-worn cameras for employees.
