Walmart has purchased the Monroeville Mall in Pennsylvania, site of the famous 1978 zombie film 'Dawn of the Dead.' The retail giant plans to redevelop the property, though details remain scarce. Experts speculate a Walmart store might be included in the mixed-use development.

Walmart has acquired an Allegheny County mall that served as the backdrop for a renowned horror film, with ambitious plans to revitalize the aging property. On Monday, news broke that the retail giant had purchased the Monroeville Mall, which gained notoriety as the filming location for the iconic 1978 George Romero zombie movie, 'Dawn of the Dead.

' Walmart spokesperson, Rickel, expressed enthusiasm for becoming part of the redevelopment project, stating, 'Walmart has been very interested in serving the community. It’s very early in the process. We’re very interested in being part of the redevelopment.' While Rickel refrained from divulging specifics about the redevelopment plans, including whether a Walmart store would be incorporated, he acknowledged the absence of a Walmart presence in the Monroeville area. Cypress Equities CEO, Chris Maguire, disclosed to the Post-Gazette that all redevelopment possibilities are under consideration, encompassing partial or complete demolition of the shopping center. 'We’re not going to limit ourselves to any outcome. We’re going to study all potential redevelopment opportunities,' he stated. Maguire envisioned a 'new vision' for the mall, likely featuring a mixed-use development, combining retail spaces, diverse businesses, restaurants, and potentially hotels and residential units. Herky Pollock, president and CEO of Legacy Realty Partners, confidently predicted that a Walmart would be a prominent element of the redeveloped mall. 'Walmart has been looking to open a store in Monroeville for over ten years,' he remarked. 'The end result will have both positive and negative ramifications on this trade area for many years to come. Needless to say, this marks an end of an era as we all grew up frequenting the mall!' The mall, which was listed for sale in December, opened its doors in 1969 and underwent renovations in 2003. It currently houses over 100 stores, including prominent retailers like Macy’s and Dick’s Sporting Goods
