“We’re gonna see a 139,000 position shortage in the next eight years, which I consider a crisis,” said Dr. Brian A. Stone.

“We’re gonna see a 139,000 position shortage in the next eight years, which I consider a crisis,” said Dr. Brian A. Stone, president and chief of the medical staff of Walker Baptist Regional Medical Center.

Dr. Stone said the need is greater now than ever before and that it can only get worse if we don’t tackle it now. He said part of the problem stems back to around 30 years ago. “In 1995-1996, we reduced the residency sizes because we were concerned about having too many physicians but what we didn’t include in the formula was the fact that the baby boomer generation was gonna retire about 40 million+ individuals around the same time,” he explained. “We’re retiring 71,000 physicians per year but we’re only graduating 21,000 per year.” This was just part of the conversation with the U.S. Senate Committee on Health Education, Labor, and Pensions. The urologist spoke at a hearing titled “What Can Congress Do to Address the Severe Shortage of Minority Health Care Professionals and the Maternal Health Crisis?”“At the bottom, K-12 education has not done a good job pushing STEM education at the earliest levels,” said the doctor. “The other part of it is the fact that medical school education and college education has become so expensive that young people are concerned about debt... Then at the next level, we don’t have enough medical school slots and enough residency slots.” While the lack of physicians will take years to correct, Dr. Stone has some potential solutions to get us started. “Moving back to models that existed when I came out like the National Heath Service Corps,” he recalled. “So if you don’t do military service, you can have individuals do service in underserved areas. I mean, we have closure of many of our rural hospitals and clinics and their are healthcare deserts all throughout Alabama. So why not pay for individuals to go to medical school or make them commit to 5-6 years of service in underserved areas?” Dr. Stone said programs like that worked in the past, so they could work again in the future, adding the government needs to invest the time and resources now to avoid more problems in the future.Wetumpka's River & Blues Festival held Saturday
