One of the world’s most exclusive hotels is making pieces of its history available to anyone—for a price.
The iconic Waldorf Astoria Hotel on New York City’s Park Avenue will auction off thousands of its furnishings starting Oct. 17 amidst a $1 billion, multi-year renovation that began after the hotel was purchased by China’s Anbang Insurance Group in 2015 for $1.95 billion....
Since its opening in 1931, the Waldorf Astoria was popular with wealthy businessmen, Hollywood stars and was a home-away-from-home for many members of foreign royal families during their trips to America. The items listed for auction reflect the hotel’s starry past, with many of the pieces coming from suites named after guests like actors Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor, the Duke of Windsor, whose abdication made way for Elizabeth II to become queen, Prime Minister Winston Churchill, President Herbert Hoover and composer Cole Porter, who lived in the hotel for about a decade.
The proceeds made from the auction will be used for the renovation of another New York City landmark: St. Bartholomew’s Church and Community House, the historic 1930s church located across the street from the hotel. According to Kaminski Auctions, select items that were deemed “historically priceless,” have been restored to be displayed once the hotel reopens, including Porter’s 1907 Steinway grand piano and a rocking chair used by President John F.
