The fifth and final season of Stranger Things is right around the corner. It’s been over three years since we last saw the Hawkins crew step back into the Upside Down, and the fourth season left off on a nightmarish note: people are missing, heroes are left for dead, and there’s a demon on the loose destroying a small town.

Warning: spoilers are ahead.Vecna Arrives in HawkinsSeason four of Stranger Things is set in the spring of 1986 and with the characters split into three different groups, including the Hawkins crew, who help Eddie Munson , the leader of their school’s Hellfire Club, as he was accused of the murder of Chrissy , when in reality she was actually killed by a mysterious force right in front of him. With a slew of other brutal murders transpiring in Hawkins, the string of events are no doubt related, which led them to the real suspect—Vecna , a human-like creature from the Upside Down.Thanks to insights from Eleven , the crew discovers the truth about Vecna. The monster was originally born Henry Creel and was the first child experiment at Hawkins Lab, who later used his psychokinetic abilities to kill his family. Once imprisoned at the lab, Dr. Brenner used Henry to inspire different experiments on other kids, including Eleven. When Eleven banished Henry to the Upside Down—an abandoned place full of demobats, demogorgons, and the Mind Flayer—Henry lost his humanity over time and became a monster as well as the ultimate ruler of the Upside Down, responsible for the torment that has plagued Hawkins since the first season. A Mission to Rescue Eleven and Hopper The California group—consisting of Mike , Will and Jonathan Byers , and Jonathan’s friend, Argyle —are searching for Eleven, who was kidnapped by Dr. Owens and Dr. Brenner. While many assumed Eleven had died in the show's first season, in actuality she was taken to a remote facility where she regained her powers, and is now being targeted by the government.Elsewhere, Joyce and Murray traveled to Russia to rescue Hopper , who is now a prisoner following the events of season three. Luckily, Hopper managed to escape from the Russian prison—but not without it ensuing chaos on the other side of the world.The Upside Down Is Bleeding into the Human World—and Max’s Fate Is Up in the AirBack in Hawkins, Max Mayfield is still struggling with the aftermath of the death of her stepbrother, Billy Hargrove , from the previous season. While grieving, Max has hallucinations of a vague presence—and confirmation that she’s the next target. In an intense scrabble, Max sacrifices herself to distract Vecna long enough for the others to attack, leaving her severely injured and in a coma. Vecna manages to escape, but before he does, he tears open Hawkins. The final scene of Stranger Things season four shows the crew witnessing the Upside Down spilling into the real world.
