Australians could head to the polls earlier than expected as the fight over public housing between the Albanese government and the Greens intensifies.

The Greens teamed up with the Coalition last week to delay a vote on the Housing Australia Future Fund until October.

“We know that there's effectively been a blocking of the legislation by it being deferred on more than one occasion - and this is good legislation,” Mr Albanese told Sky News Australia’s Chief Anchor Kieran Gilbert on Sunday. Mr Albanese last week told his caucus room that he was seeking advice on whether or not the Greens’ delayal of the vote counted as a block.

Labor’s signature reform aims to plunge $10 billion into a fund and partner with outside financing to then reinvest all returns into social and affordable housing. The Greens have refused to engage on the prospects of an early election on housing and have ramped up the pressure on the government. The Coalition has ruled out supporting the bill at all, arguing the government had not adequately considered how booming migration over the next five years would put extra strain on housing supply.
