The number of reticulated giraffes has drastically dropped, prompting an international organization to list the mammals as endangered in 2018.
The San Antonio Zoo welcomed Waffles , a reticulated giraffe, to its herd Nov. 29, providing visitors with one more of the world's tallest mammal to feed and observe. Waffles joins the zoo's three male giraffes, Alan and his offspring Cosmo and Brayden , in the recently opened Naylor Savanna , the largest habitat in the San Antonio Zoo 's history. Visitors will be able to observe the four reticulated giraffes through floor-to-ceiling windows.
San Antonio Zoo has a long but spotty history with giraffes The 1-year-old female giraffe's arrival marks a significant step in the Association of Zoos & Aquariums Species Survival Plan, an initiative that facilitates the breeding of selected species. Reticulated giraffes, native primarily to Kenya, have suffered significant population declines.
