WAC football: Sam Houston seeks faster bowl eligibility amid transition to FBS from FCS

Sam Houston State coach K.C. Keeler guided the Bearkats to a COVID-delayed FCS championship in the spring of 2021.THE WOODLANDS — In the midst of a two-year transition to FBS from FCS, where Sam Houston became a national power, the Bearkats are ineligible to defend their WAC conference championship and play in this year’s playoffs. A similar situation presumably holds true next season, with SHSU ineligible for a bowl while competing as a member of Conference USA.

“I think is going to be one year,” Keeler said. “The reason it’s going to be one year is because no one has had to navigate, in the history of college football, the transfer portal and not be able to play for anything for two years. It’s not fair. Because the landscape is constantly changing in college football, two years of not playing for a championship is seen to be a bit harsh for supporters of Sam Houston football, which is accustomed to playing on the highest stage of its division. No college football team in Texas over the past decade has won more NCAA Division I games. Only North Dakota State, Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State and Oklahoma have won more over that span.

“Our goal is to be a conference that has an opportunity to put multiple teams in the playoffs, year in and year out,” said Brian Thornton, who became WAC commissioner last November and took part in the conference’s football media day Tuesday inside The Woodlands Waterway Marriott.“Our league has tried to make sure our geography makes sense and make sure our competitive balance makes sense,” he said.
