Western Australia's premier Roger Cook has been called to intervene and help reopen the historical Pilbara ghost town of Cossack, after a traditional owner group walked away during a dispute with the government.
Ngarluma Yindjibarndi Foundation has walked away from managing the Pilbara ghost town , blaming bureaucratic delays. The West Australian Premier said he wants to see a dispute over the management of a culturally significant ghost town in the state's north resolved.
There have been long-term plans from the state government to turn Cossack into a bigger tourism drawcard. In 2020, then minister for lands Ben Wyatt announced NYFL as the "preferred proponent" to lead Cossack's revival, but the foundation said it appeared the state government had since lost interest. "We wanted to bring … some of those Dreamtime stories alive to show the kids like a show and tell things for the younger generations," Ms Churnside said. The Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage, which has authority over Cossack, suggested the NYFL's plans for Cossack were outside the scope of the original vision for the site.
"Obviously it's an important historic site, and having our traditional owners engaged in the management of that sight is a really important contribution to the local economy."Pilbara Tourism Association chairman Barry Harrison said the situation was incredibly disappointing."We're on the cusp of a big tourist season and they're already losing bookings because they've had to close their campground," he said.
