There's a work zone crash nearly every five minutes nationwide.

by Jackie Kent, KOMO News ReporterFILE - A look at a work zone sign. , and the Washington State Department of Transportation is putting faces to the stories of workers who have been seriously hurt on the job as part of a campaign to warn drivers about work zone dangers .

To put things into perspective, there's a work zone crash nearly every five minutes nationwide. WSDOT officials claim many of them are preventable, and that being more aware could save lives. The WSDOT reports the main causes for crashes are following the car in front of you too closely, speeding and distracted driving, like being on your phone or under the influence. In fact, just last week, the WSDOT recorded eight crashes in work zones along highways in Everett, Bellevue, Renton, Kent and Vancouver.

Last year on state highways, there were more than 1,200 reported incidents in work zones or in the nearby traffic backup. King County far and away had the largest number of collisions. While the number of overall crashes in Washington state work zones is actually down, the number of deadly collisions has doubled, with 10 in 2023 — many of which were in marked work zones."We’re looking at new ways of designing our work zones, which may look like doing work during daylight hours as opposed to doing more work at night for safety," WSDOT spokesperson Tina Werner explained.
