It's unclear if these updates will come to the standard MEB-based ID4 in the U.S. anytime soon.
to its interior and performance, but there's always room for improvement. The German automaker has already announced an even more updated version of the ID4's vehicle platform, the latest version of which is now dubbed MEB+, promising more range, faster charge times, and another all-new SUV, too.
Confusingly, VW was supposed to introduce an all-new Scalable Systems Platform for its next-gen EVs after the ID4, butreports that has been delayed in favor of an updated MEB platform. So far, VW claims to have already assembled more than 650,000 EVs based on the current MEB platform, around 500k of which are branded as ID models in the U.S., Europe, and China. While we only get the ID4 stateside, Europe also gets the ID3 and ID5, and China gets two versions of an SUV dubbed the ID6.
A pair of press releases suggests an all-new SUV built on the updated MEB+ platform is in development. The updated MEB+ platform is now reportedly good for 700 km of range, or roughly 435 miles, and improved charging speeds now rated up to 200 kilowatts thanks to a new generation of"unit cell" batteries.
VW is also planning to produce an updated version of its existing ID3 EV in Europe, which will get the new MEB+ platform and will be assembled at the brand's Wolfsburg plant alongside this new SUV. If the new model does come to the U.S., it will likely be assembled alongside the U.S. ID4 SUV in the brand's Tennessee assembly plant, which would help it qualify for government incentives.
