There is a lot to be said about the progress that has been made in South Africa and around the world when it comes to gender equality, but the reality is that there remains an enormous amount of work still to be done, and, if the latest World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Report is anything to go by, progress towards gender parity is stalling around the world.

Only 13% of the science, technology, engineering and mathematics graduates in South Africa are women. In addition, only one in five engineers in the country are women, making it easy to understand why there is an underrepresentation of female engineers in leadership positions. We believe there should be more women designing and constructing bridges, building new roads, maintaining infrastructure and, most importantly, owning and managing their own construction companies.

And through our procurement processes, the agency can ensure increased participation of women as contractors, professionals and suppliers
