The Franklin County Guardianship Service Board's holiday gift drive allows vulnerable adults to get gifts for the holidays.
Marta Goodrich walked along the hallway lined with tables, perusing the gifts with a list in her hands.
And on she went, finding gifts for her 38 clients. Then she took them into a neighboring room with fellow social workers gathered around a large conference table filled with holiday wrapping paper, scissors and tape. They were all wrapping the gifts to deliver to their clients, to the tune of holiday music.a board that is part of the probate court and employs social workers who act as legal guardians of adults who need them.
The number is growing, Kullman said, at least in Franklin County. Each of the 19 social workers on staff has 40 individuals to work with.People with disabilities feel forgotten:Some of the clients are homeless and are difficult to find; others are aging and don’t have family members. Still others have dementia, mental illnesses or disabilities. They often are impoverished and cannot engage an attorney to be their guardian, Kullman said.
Many of the people who received the gifts Goodrich and others were selecting Wednesday at the board’s Downtown office might not otherwise get a Christmas gift.“Their faces really light up,” Goodrich said of the clients' reactions to getting a present to open. Many are surprised when she walks in with gift bags with tissue paper sprouting out of the top, and they ask if it’s really for them.
